Get ready to walk. May 15th here I come!
| May 31 - June 1, 2003 - Can you believe it is over??? The 2003 Foothills Relay For Life, our third annual event, was an amazing success and we had a great time doing it. We had over 750 participants, more than 200 luminarias, 24 hours of entertainment, plenty of pancakes and almost enough water! Hopefully you were able to join us. If not, here are some more details: The day started out a bit cloudy and overcast, but by the time we were ready to start the opening ceremony the sun was coming out. The set up was a typical mad house with everyone rushing to get their cars in, stuff out and set up. Lots of running around. The opening ceremony included speeches by Assemblymember Frommer, Stephanie Mines and a few others. The spirits were high as the cancer survivors took the track for the first triumphant lap. We had 37 survivors in their purple t-shirts showing everyone how to do it. Team introductions and then the walking began. And walk we did. A full 24 hours of walking around the beautiful field at Crescenta Valley High School. We brought in donated bagels, water, pizza, spaghetti, salad, power bars, sandwiches and many other items to try and keep everyone energized. The food evaporated! Starbucks La Crescenta & La Caņada provided 24 hours of coffee for the event (and they brought in $2500 with their team!) Teams had their on-site fundraising which was a new addition and went really well. We had ice cold soda, delicious brownies, fresh cookies, refreshing popsicles, hot popcorn and even glow sticks when the sun went down. Thanks to those teams that brought the goodies. Many teams also raffled off donated items and then turned in all the monies collected back to the event. Everything goes to American Cancer Society. The afternoon was filled with games and music. Great bands kept us entertained and Kate had lots of fun activities for the kids. Musical chairs, balloon toss, sack race, etc. As the sun began to set it finally began to cool off. The sweaters came on and the walkers kept walking. Domino's La Crescenta brought 15 pizzas and with a few other pizzas, salads and pasta we fed the hungry crowd. Nightfall meant buy your glow sticks from Allen Lund Company and get ready for the Luminaria Ceremony. The Luminaria ceremony was as emotional as always. With a heartfelt speech by a cancer survivor, a bag-piper and Lovin' Tuneful singing Amazing Grace we were all emotional. As the candles were lit by our survivors and the lights were dimmed, we all gathered on the track and walked as each and every name and message was read. Back at the stage we gathered to finish our ceremony. The walking continued. Midnight meant Krispy Kreme's donuts and Grease on a large movie screen. Of course Montrose Travel was providing the hot popcorn next to the movie. The track was getting quieter and quieter, but they kept walking. Some of us got a few much needed hours of sleep. 5:30AM meant run to Starbucks and get everyone's coffee. With the griddle hot and the Rotary cooking IHOP pancakes, we woke everyone with a great campout meal. Yawning and stretching turned into walking and eating. 9AM came and our closing ceremony. Top teams, top individuals were recognized and we announced the total of $40,000 raised as of Sunday Morning. With all the participants hard work and dedication we had a great event.
