What a weekend! Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to make this event another great success. We raised over $123,000! Awesome. May 14-15, 2005 ! What a great weekend and an amazing success! 28 teams, more than 1000 participants, great California sun and 24 hours of fun. Who could ask for anything else? So, yes it was a bit hot, but who noticed with the great entertainment keeping us walking and walking and walking. The teams did a great job keeping a team member on the track at all times. Most teams had multiple walkers on the track at most times. Registration went very well and we made sure that everyone received their event t-shirt and found their campsite and friends. Once on the field, the morning was spent working on tents, ez-ups and decorating. Some teams were all set up by 7AM. That's what's called ready for action. The opening ceremony was upbeat and very enthusiastic thanks to Dallas Raines and his impassioned words. He spoke with the crowd as a survivor and as a motivator. He threw the literal touchdown pass to the BOCA Knight star receiver and guaranteed our success. The survivor lap was very upbeat with various team flags being waved all the way around the track. Dallas was gracious enough to take photos with everyone that wanted one and he showed that famous smile the whole time. The wall of hope was out for annual handprints, messages and encouragement. As the day grew warmer, the entertainment was non-stop. We enjoyed bands, dance groups, belly dancing, the St. Francis Drum Line and much more. Lunch was provided by Leo's All Star Sports Bar & Grill and their vendors. The midday sun was hot and the water was going quickly. Cold drinks, iced coffees and smoothies sold briskly at the on-site fundraisers run by various teams. The Allen Lund Company team did a great job keeping the walkers motivated with track events like blackjack, magic number and scrabble. The bead per lap was a huge hit and a medal of courage for those creating various jewelry pieces as they walked. The afternoon offered a little relief from the pounding sun and as the sun set we all enjoyed a delicious dinner provided by Pat & Oscar's (Los Feliz). We had more great music and continuing track events all the way through the beginning of the luminaria ceremony. The luminaria ceremony was poignant and emotional as ever. The unity lap was a slow walk together as everyone read the messages and names on each luminaria. The lights stayed out and most were gearing up for the long night ahead as some people left for their homes. The hardiest of the bunch stayed up for late night Krispy Kreme's and a couple of movies projected on the screens by the stage. The ultimate frisbee game in the dark was a sight to be seen and most of the sleeping was probably done between 4AM and 6AM. The smell of a fresh cooked pancake breakfast from the CV Rotary Intl. woke everyone up. Breakfast was typically delicious with lots of fresh fruit, OJ, coffee, etc. Tear down began in the cool of the dawn as people realized the end was near. We announced our youngest walker, our most spirited team, best campsite, best rookie team and all the other awards. The most laps was 128 laps! We announced the top 10 individuals and top 10 teams. Our closing ceremony was celebratory for everyone involved as we announced the final tally, over $108,000 raised! (Our final total was $123,700 of which only $5514 was used for expenses, t-shirts, rentals, etc. - 4.4%!) Our last lap was a group party and then everyone said their goodbyes and packed it up till next year. Thanks again to everyone for all of their work and dedication to making the 5th Annual Foothills Relay For Life another amazing event. See you in 2006.
