Get ready to walk. May 17th here I come!

June 24-25 2006 was indeed the hottest Foothills Relay For Life!

Congratulations!  Our 6th Annual Foothills Relay For Life is officially complete. We celebrated life over and over, one lap at a time.  We shared tears and joy, pain and admiration, suffering and illumination.  We got warmed up with Taix Workout Studio in the morning and didn’t cool off until the Luminaria Ceremony.  Let’s just forget about the 100+ degree heat.  How many times did I hear, “Let’s have next year’s Relay in January”.  The spirit of the participants and the Union Ice chilling our Crescenta Valley Water District water kept us cool.  Our opening ceremony was a reminder of why we Relay.  We are supporting the survivors who walked that first lap with their loved ones.  That is the Power of Purple.   The entertainment moved us all day and the deejays did a great job as they spent all 24 hours at the event as well.  The lunch was great thanks to Montrose Travel.

The afternoon was filled with music, belly dancing, walking, frisbees, waterslides and more fun.  Thankfully the afternoon brought cooler temperatures and many more participants.  The track filled up and the steps sped up.  The luminarias were placed and dinner was served.  Thank you to Pat & Oscars.  The Luminaria Ceremony was Queen Laura’s chance to shine.  The glow of her speech and her candle illuminated the candles of her Kingdom of Cure’s pretty, pretty princesses and then all the participants’ candles.  A quiet walk looking at each and every Luminaria on the track told untold stories of heartache and determination.  A movie kept the late night crowd entertained and then quiet and a starry sky filled our senses.

Sunday morning was all about getting up early and having a pancake breakfast.  I admire the people that walk all through the night.  Relay is about resolve, it is about perseverance, it is about commitment and it is about helping to find a cure.  Tim Anast from the RE/MAX Tri-City team showed his courage and dedication by walking all 24 hours.  He started walking as we were getting set up at 7AM on Saturday and stopped 24 hours later after 344 laps around the field.  The event wrapped up with awards, thank yous and congratulations to everyone.  The field was empty in less than 2 hours and the grassy field at Clark Magnet High School returned to normal.  Thanks to everyone for such a smooth and quick departure.  It is still hard to believe that this event happened in less than 90 days from start to finish.  Thank you to the Glendale Unified School District for their support of this event.

I want to thank the dedicated volunteers on our Committee for their hard work and energy given to this great event.  I want to recognize the Team Captains for making the teams happen.  We had 20 teams sign up and raised over $50,000 for cancer research, education, patient services and advocacy.  I also want to recognize the sponsors of this event that you find on your program, on the t-shirt and in this e-mail.  These sponsors allow 95% of the money raised to go straight to the American Cancer Society.  These generous donors discount, underwrite or donate the products and services needed to make our event run smoothly.  Please support and thank them.

So look for us late this year to start organizing the 2007 Foothills Relay For Life with the tentative date of 5/19-20.  We will be back in the school year and back to cooler temperatures.  We already have 7 new teams that have expressed an interest in participating next year!  We are always looking for great volunteers to help us in various capacities.  Please let us know if you know someone that might be interested in this rewarding experience.  Chris
