Get ready to walk. May 17th here I come!

What a great weekend!  25 teams, 500+ participants and over $125,000 raised!  Thank you Foothills community for a successful 2007 Foothills Relay For Life!

What an exciting weekend we had on May 19-20, 2007.  The morning started off nice and cool, just right for getting set up.  The rest of the day went really smoothly and for 24 hours the field at Clark Magnet High School held all the energy and emotion the participants could provide.  Connie Kaplan sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem that gave chill bumps and put a lump in your throat.   Survivors, Wade Battley and Dylan Crane started us off with their stories and Glendale City Councilman John Drayman told everyone why he Relays.

The purple shirts of the survivors tell the story as they walked under the balloon arch and into the loving attention by the other participants watching that first lap.  The face of triumph and hope accompanies every participant through those minutes, days and years of survivorship.  For many people, the survivor lap is the reason that they Relay.  Coming back for a medal each year means they have made it another 365 days as a survivor.  We celebrated the survivors with a specially decorated booth by our very own Survivor Chair Wade Battley.  She went all out with real trees and flowers as well as raffle prizes and refreshments.  The survivor treasure hunt led participants to each and every team's tent for a small goodie and another connection.

Live music from the CV Jazz band and a host of other groups and individuals kept spirits high as the sun came through the quickly fading marine layer.  The games started around the track and the Lund's Life Lights beads were adding up on everyone's lap counts.  The "Corn Toss" game and the obstacle course challenged those looking for something to do.   All the while tents were slowly popping up, covering the green grass in an array of bright colors.  Our "Tent City" was an amazing site this year.

Lunch from Los Gringos Rapido and burgers from Montrose Travel really hit the spot and everyone enjoyed these generous donations.  CV Rotary cooked once again and they have become a fixture at Foothills Relay For Life and we appreciate them tremendously.  More live music, karaoke and some dancing took us through the afternoon.   Team Fundraisers were in full swing as the popsicles, raffle tickets, bake sales, cold drinks, etc. kept the money coming in to fight cancer.

Dinner was from Pat & Oscars was paid for by J's Maintenance and Montrose Travel.  The salad, pasta and breadsticks were a nice break as the setting sun slowly dimmed the light on the event.  Donated pizzas, Burger King burgers, Togo's sandwiches, etc. came and went as the crowd continued to need additional calories for all those laps.   Caitlyn McLoughlin took us into the Luminaria Ceremony once again this year.

The Luminaria ceremony is a special time to remember both those who have lost their battle with cancer as well as those who are fighting the fight.  Ruth Warner and her team did a great job getting the bags decorated, placed on the track and then lit as the music started.  CJ Howard gave one of his inspirational talks as a survivor.  He had the crowd hanging on every word as he spoke.  Lighting the candles and spreading the flame of hope, the participants took to the track in a unified message that we are one big Relay For Life family.

Night time at Relay is a varied time depending on who you were.  We had people heading off to sleep, walkers walking, hungry people making snacks, games by lantern light, running to stay awake, etc.  The coolness of the night air was a welcome relief and the glow of the luminarias lit the path all night long.  Most teams had a participant on the track throughout the night.

Sunday morning welcomed us with CV Rotary pancakes courtesy of J's Maintenance.  Fresh pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee, just like homemade.   The closing ceremony had an electric buzz as everyone waited to hear how they had done as individuals, teams and as an event.  Top ten individuals, top ten teams and the final number.................over $125,000 raised to help in the fight against cancer.

One last lap as a group and off we went, back to our regular lives, back to our jobs, back to our schooling, back to reality, but back with a new outlook thanks to the Relay For Life.  We hope you had a great time and we hope you'll be back next year.  See you then!

Thanks to the fantastic committee.  These dedicated volunteers are the ones that help make this event so special.  Thanks to the sponsors for generously giving money, products, food, etc. to help defer the costs.  Our event is typically under 5% when it comes to expenses and this year we were closer to 3%!   Thanks to everyone at the Glendale Unified School District and all the staff at Clark Magnet High School for letting us hold this event on their property.  They have been very supportive of all of our efforts  and we thank them!  Please watch for updates on next year's event and have a great year.
